What is Polyacrylamide?

Polyacrylamide (PAM), is a versatile polymer with a linear-chain structure, ranging in molecular weights from 3,000,000 to 30,000,000 Daltons. It is a highly water-absorbent dry powder, resembling table salt, that forms a soft gel when hydrated. PAM is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and easily decomposes into its base elements at temperatures above 120°C. It finds extensive use across various industries, including water treatment, papermaking, petroleum, mining, textiles, and construction.

  1. Based on appearance: Gel Polyacrylamide and Granular Polyacrylamide.
  2. According to ionic degree: Cationic Polyacrylamide (CPAM), Anionic Polyacrylamide (APAM), Non-ionic Polyacrylamide (NPAM), Amphoteric Polyacrylamide (ACPAM).

One of the primary applications of polyacrylamide is its use as a flocculant to agglomerate solids in liquids. This process is widely employed in water treatment and industries such as paper and screen printing. It is available in powder or liquid form, with the liquid form further categorized into solution and emulsion polymers.

Applications:

  1. Anionic PAM: Widely used in chemical industry wastewater treatment, municipal sewage treatment, coal washing, ore dressing, metallurgy, iron and steel, and electronics industry. Also used in petroleum industry for enhanced oil recovery, as well as in paper additives and textile pulp agents.
  2. Cationic PAM: High efficiency and dehydration rate make it suitable for wastewater treatment in various industries such as alcohol, monosodium glutamate, sugar, beverage, tannery, printing, and dyeing. It works effectively when used in combination with inorganic coagulants and can also be used as a paper-making additive.
  3. Non-ionic PAM: Ideal for acidic wastewater treatment due to its non-ionic functional groups, as it is minimally affected by pH and salt concentration. It performs better than APAM under acidic conditions.
  4. Amphoteric PAM: Can be used across a wide range of pH values and finds applications in diverse wastewater treatment scenarios, including oil, organic, and inorganic sewage, as well as sludge dewatering. It is also used as a papermaking additive and in oil field water shut-off applications.

Polyacrylamide Usage Guidelines:

  1. Dilution: Prior to use, polyacrylamide should be diluted by dissolving it in water. It is crucial to use tap water for this purpose, avoiding the use of sewage water.
  2. Dissolution Ratio: The typical recommended dissolution ratio for polyacrylamide is between 0.1% and 0.3% concentration.
  3. Dissolving Tank: In sewage treatment applications, a dissolving tank or pool (non-iron material) is necessary. It should be equipped with a stirring device to ensure proper mixing.
  4. Mixing Process: Begin by adding a certain amount of water to the dissolving tank or pool. Start the stirring device and gradually introduce polyacrylamide while simultaneously injecting water. It is important to add the polyacrylamide slowly and evenly into the water to prevent clumping (rapid addition can lead to clumping).
