The Composition and main Classifications of Polyaluminum Chloride

This blog article introduces the composition and main classifications of polyaluminum chloride (PAC).

Poly aluminum chloride is prepared by reacting industrial hydrochloric acid, calcium aluminate powder, and aluminum alum. It can exist in the form of granules or powders, with granules referred to as plate-and-frame PAC and powders known as spray PAC. These two types can have colors such as white, yellow-brown, and yellow, and they are divided into drinking water grade and industrial grade. Drinking water grade PAC is mainly used for drinking water treatment, as well as in the pharmaceutical and food industries. The current execution standard is GB/15892-2009, which was revised in 2020. Compared to the 2009 standard, the 2020 standard has stricter requirements for all aspects. Drinking water grade PAC is available in white and light yellow colors, with white PAC having a faster dissolution rate. All drinking water grade PAC is in the form of spray.

Industrial grade PAC is divided into spray and plate-and-frame types, distinguished primarily by their aluminum oxide content. The 30% and 28% content (referring to aluminum oxide) can be found in both spray and plate-and-frame industrial grade products, with the difference being that spray products undergo plate-and-frame filtration, while plate-and-frame products do not. The 26%, 24%, 22%, and 20% content (referring to aluminum oxide content) are collectively referred to as industrial grade products, and their execution standard is GB/T22627-2014.

PAC has a wide range of applications. It is mainly used for drinking water treatment to meet human consumption standards, as well as for purifying industrial water to meet recycling or discharge standards, thereby saving water costs and preventing environmental pollution. Additionally, PAC can be used in various industries such as mining areas, leather factories, breweries, dyeing factories, meat processing plants, pharmaceutical factories, printing factories, coal washing plants, sand washing plants, and heavy metal wastewater treatment plants.

It is crucial to choose the appropriate PAC with the desired content and to control the usage amount properly. Excessive usage may introduce side effects and affect the precipitation and flocculation rate. It is recommended to conduct small-scale trials before large-scale usage to avoid unnecessary losses.
